Terms of service
The rules for using JagChess: what you can expect from it, what it expects from you, and who is responsible for what. Plain language, because most of the people reading it are students.
Agreeing to these terms
JagChess is a platform chess clubs use to run puzzles, events, attendance, tournaments, newsletters and rewards. It is run by the North Creek Chess Club, and it is a student-built, student-run project rather than a company.
By creating an account or using the site, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree to them, please do not use JagChess. How we handle your information is covered separately, in the privacy policy, which is part of these terms.
Who can use JagChess
JagChess is built for school and scholastic chess clubs, so many of the people using it are students. You may use it if you can form a binding agreement with us, or if a parent, guardian or school has agreed on your behalf.
If you are under the age your country sets for handling personal information online, use JagChess only with the involvement of a parent, guardian or school. Clubs are expected to follow whatever rules their school or organisation has about collecting student information and about parental consent.
Your account
- Give accurate information when you sign up, and keep it current.
- Your account is yours. Do not share your password, and do not sign in as somebody else.
- You are responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us if you think somebody else has got into it.
- One person, one account. Do not make accounts to get around a ban, to inflate a leaderboard, or to claim rewards more than once.
Clubs, and who is responsible
Each club on JagChess runs its own space — its members, its puzzles, its events, its registration form and its rewards. This matters for working out who is responsible for what:
- A club's admins decide who joins, what the registration form asks, what gets posted, and what the points are worth. They are responsible for those decisions, for the content they publish, and for handling their members' information properly.
- We are responsible for the platform itself — keeping it running, keeping it secure, and handling information as the privacy policy describes.
- We do not moderate every club. JagChess is not able to review everything clubs and members post. If something here breaks these terms, tell us and we will look at it.
Joining a club means its admins can see the things listed in the privacy policy, including your email address and your answers to that club's registration form. You can leave a club at any time.
What you may not do
Use JagChess for chess, and for running a chess club. Do not:
- harass, bully, threaten or impersonate anybody, or post content that is hateful, sexual, violent or otherwise inappropriate for a school setting;
- cheat — using an engine or another person's help where a game or puzzle is meant to be your own work, or manipulating points, streaks or leaderboards;
- upload anything unlawful, or anything you do not have the right to share;
- try to break, overload, scrape or get unauthorised access to the site, other people's accounts, or other clubs' data;
- use JagChess to send spam, or to send newsletters to people who did not ask for them;
- work around any limit, permission or ban the site or a club has set.
What you make here
Puzzles you build, announcements you write, newsletters you send and answers you submit stay yours. We do not claim ownership of them.
By posting something to a club, you give us and that club permission to store it, display it and share it in the ways the site normally works — for example, showing a puzzle to the club's members, or publishing a collection to the public library if the club chooses to share it. This permission exists only so the site can do what you asked it to do.
Two things are worth spelling out, because they are easy to miss:
- Publishing to the library makes it public. A shared collection can be read and played by anybody on JagChess, and each puzzle carries the name of the club it came from and the person who built it.
- Adoption. If a club's admin adopts a member's puzzle, the author is paid in that club's points and the original is retired. Building a puzzle on a club's shelf means agreeing that the club's admins may do this.
We may remove content that breaks these terms, or that a club asks us to remove from its own space.
Points, streaks and rewards
Points and streaks are a scorekeeping feature inside a club. They are not money, they have no cash value, they cannot be exchanged for cash, and they cannot be transferred between clubs or between people.
Where a club runs a rewards shop, the club provides the rewards, not JagChess. Whether a reward exists, what it costs in points and whether you actually receive it are matters between you and your club. A club's admins can adjust points, and points may be lost if a club is deleted or if your membership ends.
Connected services
JagChess connects to services run by other companies, and using them means agreeing to their terms as well as these:
- Google — sign-in, hosting and the database (Google Terms of Service);
- Gmail — optional, for admins sending newsletters from their own address. You are responsible for what you send, and for sending it only to people who expect it;
- Lichess — optional, for playing and for tournaments (Lichess Terms of Service). Lichess has its own rules about fair play, and breaking them is between you and Lichess.
We are not responsible for those services, and we cannot fix them when they are down.
What it costs
JagChess is currently free to use. No payment is taken through the site and no payment details are collected.
If paid plans are introduced later, they will not apply to you without notice, and nothing here obliges you to pay for anything you have not agreed to.
Availability and changes
JagChess is run by students, in their own time, on free hosting. We will do our best to keep it up, but we cannot promise it will always be available, and we may change, add or remove features as the site develops.
Please keep your own copy of anything you would be upset to lose.
Suspension and ending your account
You can stop using JagChess whenever you like, leave a club from within the site, or ask us to delete your account. A club's admins can remove or ban you from their own club.
We may suspend or remove an account that breaks these terms, that puts other people or the site at risk, or that we are required to act on by law. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will say why.
When a club is deleted, what lived inside it — members, events, puzzles, attendance and orders — is deleted with it.
No warranty
JagChess is provided as is, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure against every threat, that puzzles and ratings are accurate, or that it will meet your club's particular needs.
Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows, JagChess and the people who run it are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost data, points or rewards, or for anything arising out of a club admin's decisions, another user's conduct, or a connected service being unavailable.
Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot legally be limited.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the date at the top of this page changes with them. Significant changes will be announced in the site. Carrying on using JagChess after a change means accepting the new terms.
